Basic Flower Care - 6 Steps

Happy flowers last longer!

‍With blooms from Little Hill Flower Farm, just a few easy steps can make them last days longer

  • Always use a clean vase for fresh flowers. The general rule is, if you wouldn't drink out of it, it isn't clean enough for flowers. To get a sparkling clean vase, use bleach to kill any lingering bacteria.
  • Feed your flowers as soon as you get them home. Flowers need food, even after they are cut. Add 1 packet of flower food to the water in your vase to give those blooms the food they need.
  • Don't place flowers next to fruit or in bright sunshine. The bright light as well as the gas front ripening fruit can shorten the life-span of your flowers.
  • Give flowers fresh water every 2-3 days. When refilling your vase with  water, snip 1" off the stems at a diagonal to help blooms get a good drink.
  • Remove spent blooms. Keep your bouquet looking fresh by discarding wilted flowers.
  • Come pick a new bouquet! We believe fresh flowers are a simple luxury that brightens your home.

    Woodies & Sap

Special care for branches & Daffodils

    Woody Branches
When it comes to bouquets, getting them the drink they need is crucial. While flowering branches and woody foliage usually have a long vase life, helping them to take up water sometimes takes some extra care.

To use shrubs and tree branches, stems must be cut 2-3" vertically up the stem. Cutting vertically allows the woodies to get the water up to the top.

    Daffodils
The early spring daffodils are so exciting to see and are just asking to become a bouquet. Daffodils, once cut, leak a sap that is toxic to other flowers. Before adding them into a larger arrangement, set the daffodils in their own vase for 2-3 hours. Then feel free to mix them with other blooms, just don't recut their stems.
